Introduction to Microboards – Melbourne VIC
July 2, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm AESTFree
Do you wonder what will happen to your child with a disability when you can no longer support them?
Do you want to be able employ your own supports to provide the kind of care your family member needs?
Got lots of great ideas for a great life but struggling to be able to do it all on your own?
Do you want the flexibility of self managing NDIS funds but worried about doing it all on your own?
A microboard is a network of trusted people including family and friends who freely give their time to support a person with disability to imagine, plan and safeguard the good life the person with a disability seeks. This network is formalised by becoming an incorporated association.
When the main carers like parents or siblings are unable to support their family member due to death, old age or ill health having a Microboard means that the person with a disability still has people around them that know them really well and can support them to continue building a good life. The legal structure of a Microboard ensures accountability to the person with a disability.
The microboard can also support families or individuals to self manage their ndis funds. It’s a great way to stay in control of your ndis funding but get the support of others who love and care about the person with a disability and share the workload of self management.

Microboards Australia is the only organisation in Australia that is endorsed by Vela Microboards to support microboard development. Vela Microboards is the organisation that founded Microboards over 30 years ago in Canada.
Jaquie has been one of the pioneer families developing the microboard model in Australia over the past decade in partnership with Vela Canada. Her son Eli’s microboard has supported him to have an active social life, his own business, a girlfriend and to live independently.
A former high school teacher, she has a particular interest in how to support people with complex communication needs and behaviours which can be challenging. She was a finalist in the 2017 West Australian of the Year awards in recognition of her work supporting people with complex needs.
Sheree is the mother of Isaac, a young man with a complex disability. Like many parents of a child with a disability she was very anxious about what would happen to him when she could no longer support him. With the help of Microboards Australia, she established her son’s Microboard – Isaac’s Band of Brothers and Sisters Inc in 2014. Sheree joined Microboards Australia in 2017 and has been working with a group of families on the east coast of Australia to set up Microboards.
Sheree loves the incredible power of friends working together under a formalised structure to support their friend with a disability to live a good life.
