Microboards can set themselves up as employers. This can allow them to
- hire and train people to provide highly personalised support to the person at the centre of the microboard
- no longer having to rely on agencies that don’t meet the person’s needs
- get more value out of funding
To be a responsible employer it is important to ensure your microboard complies with various laws or your board members could be held liable.
Our Becoming a Responsible Employer program provides step by step guidance on how to set up your microboard or other business entity type to comply with all the relevant legal and taxation obligations.
We also offer a program on Recruiting and Managing Staff which provides microboards with strategies, tools, templates and resources for recruiting the right people, getting them started on the right track, supporting them to perform at their best and how to end employment of a staff member.
Our Learning Program
Our learning program is broken down into 6 learning modules:
Budget – Create your budget so you know what you can afford
Organisation Setup – Set up your organisation to be the employer – Business registration, Australian Business Number, Tax file number, Registering for PAYG withholding and Business Activity Statements
Insurance – Ensure you have the appropriate insurances

Policies – Develop policies that protect your workers and the person being supported.
Systems – Implement IT systems to manage payroll and record keeping
Delivery of the Learning Program
Learning is delivered over 4 months via online learning modules that can be shared among microboard members. Participants also attend 2 intensive workshops to consolidate their learning.
Support to Implement Learning
To support microboards to implement what they learn and problem solve any hurdles, Microboards Australia offers monthly webinars where microboard members can pose problems and have the support of experts to help overcome them.
We also support participants to gather with their peers in peer support groups and provide some structure on how to get the best outcome from these groups.
Included in the Becoming a Responsible Employer program is 2 hours of individual coaching with mentors. More hours can be purchased at an additional cost.
